'''Fundamentals of Nursing''' is the foundational subject area of nursing education. It covers the core knowledge, psychomotor skills, and clinical judgment that every nurse uses on every shift, regardless of practice setting or patient population. The subject includes the nursing process, basic care and comfort, hygiene, mobility and positioning, elimination, rest and sleep, pain management, vital sign measurement and interpretation, safety, infection prevention, and documentation. On the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN examinations, this content is tested most heavily within the Basic Care and Comfort client needs subcategory, and it also threads through Safety and Infection Control, Health Promotion and Maintenance, and Management of Care. Because the nursing process is the organizing framework for nearly every NCLEX item, mastery of assessment, analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation improves performance across the entire examination, not only on fundamentals questions. The core teaching content in this subject is shared by both the registered nurse and the licensed practical or vocational nurse tracks, because the underlying physiology, skills, and safety principles are identical. What differs is the level of application. Registered nurse practice emphasizes comprehensive assessment, nursing diagnosis, care plan development, evaluation of outcomes, prioritization across a group of patients, and appropriate delegation of basic care tasks to licensed practical nurses and assistive personnel. Licensed practical nurse practice emphasizes accurate and safe performance of basic care skills, focused data collection, reinforcement of teaching the registered nurse has already provided, monitoring of stable patients, and prompt, accurate reporting of findings to the registered nurse. Nurses who are strong in fundamentals catch deterioration early, prevent avoidable harm such as falls, pressure injuries, catheter-associated infections, and aspiration, and preserve patient dignity during the most personal moments of care. These skills are not introductory material to be left behind after the first semester. They remain the daily substance of professional nursing practice.
