== Activities Commonly Outside LPN Scope == Again subject to state variation, LPNs are typically '''not''' authorized to: * Perform the initial or comprehensive nursing assessment on admission, transfer, or a significant change in condition. * Formulate nursing diagnoses or independently develop, revise, or evaluate the plan of care. * Administer intravenous push medications. Many states also restrict LPN administration of blood and blood products, chemotherapy, and certain high-alert intravenous drips. * Hang or manage blood products, or perform the verification and monitoring required for transfusion, in most jurisdictions. * Perform the initial patient teaching for new content, as opposed to reinforcing established teaching. * Care for the unstable or unpredictable patient whose condition requires ongoing complex assessment and judgment. * Triage patients or provide telephone triage advice. * Accept and transcribe verbal or telephone orders from providers in many states. * Delegate nursing care to another licensed nurse, or accept accountability for the RN's assessment and planning functions.
