== Client Rights == Patients retain the rights to: considerate and respectful care; information about diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in understandable terms; participation in decisions about their care; refusal of treatment and of participation in research; an advance directive that will be honored; privacy and confidentiality; access to and a copy of their own medical record; an explanation of charges; knowledge of facility policies affecting care; freedom from restraint or seclusion used for staff convenience, coercion, discipline, or retaliation; freedom from abuse, neglect, and exploitation; interpreter services; and the ability to voice a grievance without retaliation. '''Application note.''' Patients also have the right to leave '''against medical advice'''. A competent adult who wishes to leave is informed of the risks, asked to sign the AMA form, and offered follow-up and prescriptions; the provider is notified. Refusing to sign the form does not authorize detaining the patient. Physically preventing a competent adult from leaving is false imprisonment.
