== Purpose of the exam == The NCLEX-RN is a criterion-referenced licensure examination, not a ranking or admissions test. It measures whether a candidate demonstrates the minimum competency required to practice safely and effectively as a newly licensed entry-level RN. Candidates are not compared with one another, and there is no curve. The result is reported as pass or fail only, with no numeric score. The content of the test plan is derived from a periodic practice analysis of newly licensed RNs, which surveys the activities that new nurses actually perform and how critical and frequent those activities are. This is why the exam emphasizes safety, prioritization, delegation, and judgment rather than recall of isolated facts.
